Solaro Estate Winery made for a nice excursion into the Hill Country outside of Austin. The tasting room, located adjacent to the vineyard, has large windows for enjoying views of the vines and the Hill Country. There is a patio area in front of the tasting room, covered by canopies, which I can envision would make make for a relaxing place to enjoy your wine (on a day much cooler than the 98 degree day of my visit).
The staff in the tasting room were friendly and knowledgeable. From them, I learned that the wines themselves were mostly Italian style from grapes grown on the estate or elsewhere in Texas. All of the wines we tasted were enjoyable, but not spectacular. The Mourvedre was my personal favorite. The only negative comment I have is the almost laughably high prices per bottle.
So, if visiting Austin and looking to spend a few hours in the Hill Country, Solaro Estate is a nice getaway. But, if looking for a great bottle of wine for dinner, your local wine shop will have many far better options in this price range.
